Search Strategies | Diacritical Marks

Search Key Point #1
Use less information, not more, when searching—look for unique letter combinations, use only part of a name, etc. (Ex.  Use "vand" and not "Vandall, Robert") to find a composer.

Search Key Point #2
The
less information you enter, the more results the search will yield, and the more likely you will find what you are looking for. If you try entering complete titles or names, you're likely to end up frustrated. Search field boxes within Vivace are not the place to be complete and thorough. :)

  • Optimum results usually come from search criteria of 4-5 letters, especially if there is a unique combination like "qu." Sometimes you can just use 3 letters.
  • If your search yields too many entries, add another letter to your search criteria.
  • Capital letters are not necessary.
  • If you want to find a name of a composer, teacher, piece, etc. that contains an accent mark, an umlaut, a tilde, etc., you must type the diacritical (accent) mark in your search, or it will not find it in the database. However, searching the non-diacritical part of the name will also find what you need.
Sample searches and results for the composer Barés, Basile Jean:

  1.  search for "bar"
  2.  search for "Baré"
  3.  search for "bare"

The first and second searches find the correct composer; the third one does not. If you are unsure of the keystrokes needed, just Google it. Or use non-diacritical parts of a word as your search criteria.

Trust us—Bartók and Burgmüller are in the system; Bartok and Burgmuller are not. :)

As a last resort . . .
It is the teacher's responsibility to follow all search steps above before asking for the Festival/Area Admin to request a composer be added to the database. The teacher must provide the Admin with the 1) full name, 2) year of birth, 3) year of death (if applicable), and 4) nationality. The Festival/Area Admin will submit the request to the National Admin, and notify the teacher when the composer is in the database.
